Submit Site To Baidu: Website URL Submission Guide 2016

6 May 2016 | Blog | 0 comments

Executive Summary

Does Baidu index registered sites with zero web pages in the Chinese language? Using a live flooring website with 100% English and 0% Simplified or Traditional Chinese web pages as an example, I invalidated claims made by some websites that Baidu will not index sites that contain 0 Chinese web pages. While the claim may be valid in the past, it definitely no longer holds true now. As of 06 May 2016, this flooring domain now has at least 40 English web pages indexed by Baidu.

How do I submit site to Baidu for indexing then? This question is answered in the following arguably most current illustrated how-to guide on submitting your website URLs to Baidu. It is a follow-up post from my 2 articles on “Digital Marketing China” and “Baidu Site Verification” for 2016.

Previously, I highlighted 4 tasks businesses looking to grab a slice of China’s growth pie need to focus on in 2016, namely having responsive/mobile-friendly websites, adding website URLs to Baidu and performing the associated SEO and SEM.

This post aims to focus on providing non Simplified Chinese (简体中文) readers with step-by-step guidance with accompanying screenshots on submitting your website’s associated URL(s) to Baidu so they have a fighting chance of appearing in search results when Chinese netizens BǎiDù YīXià (“百度一下” which is analogous with “Google for it”).

All 6 Baidu URL submission methods are covered in this article, namely:

A) 3 Automatic Submission (自动提交) Methods

A1) Active Push (Real Time) (主动推送(实时))

A2) Automatic Push (自动推送)

A3) Sitemap

B) 3 Manual Submission (手动提交) Methods

B1) Submission of Non-Verified Domain’s Links (提交非验证站点链接)

B2) Manual Submission for Baidu Verified Sites (手动提交)

B3) Manual Original Content Submission (手动提交原创内容)

Using a live flooring website with 100% English and 0% Simplified or Traditional Chinese web pages as an example, I invalidated claims made by some websites that Baidu will not index sites that contain 0 Chinese web pages. As of 06 May 2016, this flooring domain now has at least 40 English web pages indexed by Baidu.

However, please verify your domain ownership on Baidu Webmaster Platform (百度站长平台) first before returning to this article for website URL submission guidance. English instructions with accompanying screenshots for verifying site ownership was detailed in my previous article on “Baidu Site Verification” for 2016.

Why is this important? On the Link Submission page of the Baidu Webmaster Platform, Baidu provides a notice recommending webmasters to verify site ownership prior to using its active push tool for real-time submission of website URLs. It claims that your submitted links will be grabbed faster this way.

Baidu (百度), like other major search engines, includes the usual disclaimer that links submission does not guarantee search engine indexation. It also maintains the typical ambiguity about the “standards” it follows. Baidu webmaster platform provides webmasters with a links submission channel. You can submit links you want to be included in Baidu. Baidu search engine will process them according to “standards” (标准) but “does not guarantee” (不保证) it will be able to include your submitted links.

Without further ado, let’s get started on how to submit your website URLs to Baidu.

Step A: Baidu indexed which web pages already?

Before we submit our website URLs via Baidu Webmaster Platform (百度站长平台), it is always good to know which pages for our domain has been indexed by Baidu already. Simply perform a site: query on our domain name and click the Blue “百度一下” button at http://www.baidu.com/. For instance, searching for site:alpharoi.com will list all the pages belonging to the domain alpharoi.com that have been indexed by Baidu.

TIP:
For any websites offering to help you get your web pages listed on Baidu, find out which of their web pages have been indexed by Baidu (百度) already too. The rationale is obvious: if they can’t even list a single web page of theirs on Baidu, how could we be reasonably assured of any chances of our own being listed on Baidu at all by engaging their services.

I will be demonstrating how to submit website URLs for the domain www.theflooringdecor.com. Firstly, as shown below, querying site:www.theflooringdecor.com will yield the list of web pages belonging to the domain that has been indexed by Baidu, if any.

As you would have expected, Baidu reverts with zero results found. This means zero web pages belonging to the domain www.theflooringdecor.com was indexed by Baidu then. If the web page or new site is not included in its index, Baidu suggests that we submit the URL to it by clicking the Blue link as shown below.

Step B: Submission of Non-Verified Domain’s Links (提交非验证站点链接)

A new web page similar to the one below will open. Click the “Submit” (提交) Blue button to submit your web page URL to Baidu.

Then, the usual login dialogue box pops up. Login to your Baidu Webmaster Platform (百度站长平台) using the Mobile/Email/Username (手机/邮箱/用户名) and associated Password (密码) you have previously used to register for your Baidu account. Follow the 4 numbered steps below if you need visual guidance. Don’t have an existing Baidu account? Register for a new one here.

Upon login to your Baidu Webmaster Platform, you will be greeted with the following “Completed” (完成) confirmation box with the “Link submission success” (链接提交成功) message as shown below. Click the “Confirm” (确定) Blue button to close this box. Key in each URL individually and click the “Submit” (提交) Blue button to submit more web pages to Baidu for indexing.

Step C (Optional): Alternative Web Site Submission Methods within Baidu Webmaster Platform

After logging into your Baidu Webmaster Platform, click to expand the “Webpage Fetch” (网页抓取) section. Then click the “Link Submission” (链接提交) side navigation tab.

Within the light blue box in the middle of the screen below, Baidu gives advice on choosing an appropriate link submission method from the 4 modes provided:

  1. Active Push: Most rapid submission mode. Baidu recommends that you submit the newest links of the day for your site via this method to ensure these links can be included by Baidu in a timely manner.
  2. Automatic Push: Most convenient submission mode. Please deploy the Automatic Push JavaScript (JS) code on the source code for every webpage of your website. Whenever the deployed code on each web page is viewed, the link will be automatically pushed to Baidu. This mode can be use in conjunction with the Active Push mode.
  3. Sitemap: You can regularly include all links for your website onto your sitemap and submit it to Baidu. Baidu will periodically fetch to check your submitted sitemap and process the included links. However, Baidu warns that inclusion speed via this mode is slower than the Active Push mode.
  4. Manual Submission: You can use this mode for one-off link submission to Baidu.

Step C1A (Optional): “Automatic Submission” (自动提交) via “Active Push (Real Time)” (主动推送(实时)) Mode

Scrolling down, Baidu has organized the various submission modes into 2 tabs, namely the “Automatic Submission” (自动提交) and “Manual Submission” (手动提交) tabs. The “Automatic Submission” (自动提交) tab comprises 3 sub tabs, namely the “Active Push (Real Time)” (主动推送(实时)), “Automatic Push” (手动推送), and “sitemap” sub tabs.

Make sure the “Push Data” (推送数据) drop-down option is currently selected. This is important as toggling between different drop-down options will display the corresponding set of instructions and sample codes for pushing, updating and deleting data. You also have the option of generating a new 16 characters case-sensitive alphanumeric Access Secret Key or Token if necessary.

Sample codes for using curl, post, php, or ruby to push data to Baidu are also provided. Sample submission success and error messages are also provided via links below these sample codes. This submission mode assumes you are technically proficient and comfortable with using curl, post, php, or ruby.

Step C1B (Optional): “Automatic Submission” (自动提交) via “Automatic Push” (自动推送) Mode

Clicking the “Automatic Push” (自动推送) sub tab toggles to the following new screen. Follow the 3 numbered steps below if you need visual guidance for duplicating the JavaScript (JS) code and more details on the installation instructions.

Webmasters should periodically check this sub tab for the latest “Automatic Push” JS code to be inserted within each webpage’s HTML source code on your site. The current version of the code as at 06 May 2016 is:

<script>
(function(){
    var bp = document.createElement('script');
    var curProtocol = window.location.protocol.split(':')[0];
    if (curProtocol === 'https') {
        bp.src = 'https://zz.bdstatic.com/linksubmit/push.js';
    }
    else {
        bp.src = 'http://push.zhanzhang.baidu.com/push.js';
    }
    var s = document.getElementsByTagName("script")[0];
    s.parentNode.insertBefore(bp, s);
})();
</script>

If the webmaster developed the site using PHP language, you can implement using the following steps instead:

  1. Create a new file with the filename “baidu_js_push.php” and the above “Automatic Push” JS code as contents.
  2. Add the following line of code after the tag within every PHP template page file.

<?php include_once(“baidu_js_push.php”) ?>

In order to more quickly uncover each day’s latest contents on your site, Baidu Webmaster Platform launched the “Active Push” tool. However, some webmasters feedback technical barriers regarding the use of Baidu’s “Active Push” mode are relatively high. Subsequently, Baidu Webmaster Platform launched this light-weight link submission module or “Automatic Push” JavaScript (JS) code. Page links will be automatically pushed to Baidu whenever each web page containing the JS code is accessed, aiding more speedy discovery of new pages by the search engine.

Step C1C (Optional): “Automatic Submission” (自动提交) via “Sitemap” Mode

Previously, Baidu only enabled this submission mode for selected websites meeting its internal criteria. The good news is this functionality is now available to all sites in the latest version of the Baidu Webmaster Platform. The bad news for some is you will need to be able to recognise and key in the 4 Simplified Chinese CAPTCHA (“Completely Automated Public Turing test to tell Computers and Humans Apart”) characters to complete the submission process via this mode.

Kindly note the following requirements for your sitemap files:

  1. Acceptable sitemap file formats are TXT or XML only. Each file must be smaller than 10 MB in size and contain no more than 50,000 URLs;
  2. If you have verified the primary domain of your site, then the sitemap file can contain all URLs under the primary domain.

You will be greeted with the following “Add Operation Completed” (添加操作完成) confirmation box with the “Addition success” (添加成功) message as shown below. Click the “Confirm” (确定) Blue button to close this box.

Upon closing the above confirmation box, you will then see the current status for your submitted sitemap(s) in the table below the “Submit” (提交) Blue button. The “Status” (状态) column allows for dynamically filtering the table outputs by “All” (全部), “Waiting” (等待), “Normal” (正常), or “Erroneous” (错误).

By checking the boxes to the left of the corresponding sitemaps, you could update or delete the selected sitemaps with Baidu as needed.

Step C2A (Optional): “Manual Submission for Baidu Verified Sites” (手动提交)

Now we turn to the “Manual Submission” modes by clicking the right tab. Here we come to realize it appears that Baidu differentiates manually submitted links into 3 broad categories:

  1. Submission of Non-Verified Domain’s Links (提交非验证站点链接) which I had covered in Step B above,
  2. Manual Submission for Baidu Verified Sites (手动提交), and
  3. Manual Original Content Submission (手动提交原创内容).

Recall the notice on the Link Submission page of the Baidu Webmaster Platform that I mentioned in the Executive Summary of this article. Baidu recommends webmasters to verify site ownership prior to using its active push tool for real-time submission of website URLs. That is the same page that Baidu redirects you to when you click the “Submission of Non-Verified Domain’s Links” (提交非验证站点链接) Blue link. It also claims that your submitted links will be grabbed faster this way. Therefore, I would expect Baidu to process manually submitted links based on the above order of increasing priority too.

Once again, follow the 4 numbered steps below if you need visual guidance when using the manual submission mode for Baidu verified sites:

You will be greeted with the following “Completed” (完成) confirmation box with the “Link submission success” (链接提交成功) message as shown below. Click the “Confirm” (确定) Blue button to close this box.

Step C2B (Optional): Manual Original Content Submission (手动提交原创内容)

Now we turn to the third and final mode of “Manual Submission” by clicking the Manual Original Content Submission (手动提交原创内容) Blue link as indicated in Step C2A above. Similarly, follow the 2 numbered steps below if you need visual guidance when using the manual submission mode for original content from Baidu verified sites:

Once again, you will be greeted with the following “Completed” (完成) confirmation box with the “Link submission success” (链接提交成功) message as shown below. Click the “Confirm” (确定) Blue button to close this box.

CONCLUSION

As promised, I have provided above arguably the most current step-by-step guidance on the 6 methods for submitting your website URLs via the Baidu Webmaster Platform for the benefit of non Simplified Chinese readers. I also demonstrated via a live flooring website that, contrary to claims by some websites, even one that does not have any Chinese web pages can be indexed by Baidu.

Congratulations! With the knowledge gained from my previous and current articles, now you can verify ownership of your domain and submit URLs to Baidu for indexing. These mark the first steps as your web pages begin their climb up the rankings to eventually emerge tops on the Baidu search results.

As you strive towards having responsive/mobile-friendly websites, adding website URLs to Baidu and performing the associated SEO and SEM, I wish you every success in grabbing a huge slice of China’s growth pie in 2016 and beyond!
