Baidu Site Verification: Add & Verify Main & Sub-Domains Guide 2016
Baidu Site Verification – How do I add and verify my site with Baidu? This question is answered in the following arguably most current illustrated how-to guide on adding and verifying your web site URL to Baidu. It is a follow-up post from my article on “Digital Marketing China”. Previously, I highlighted 4 tasks businesses looking to grab a slice of China’s growth pie need to focus on in 2016, namely having responsive/mobile-friendly websites, adding website URLs to Baidu and performing the associated SEO and SEM.
This post aims to focus on providing non Simplified Chinese (简体中文) readers with step-by-step guidance on the Baidu site verification process. Specifically, it entails adding or verifying your domain ownership on Baidu Webmaster Platform (百度站长平台), before proceeding to submit related URLs for indexing so they have a fighting chance of appearing in search results when Chinese netizens BǎiDù YīXià (“百度一下” which is analogous with “Google for it”).
Why is this important? On the “Link Submission” (链接提交) page of the Baidu Webmaster Platform, Baidu provides a notice recommending webmasters to verify site ownership prior to using its active push tool for real-time submission of website URLs. It claims that your submitted links will be grabbed faster this way.
Similar to major search engines, Baidu also includes the usual disclaimer that links submission does not guarantee search engine indexation and maintains the typical ambiguity about the “standards” it follows. Baidu webmaster platform provides webmasters with a links submission channel. You can submit links you want to be included in Baidu. Baidu search engine will process them according to “standards” (标准) but “does not guarantee” (不保证) it will be able to include your submitted links.
Without further ado, let’s get started on honing your Baidu site verification skills by learning how to add and verify your site with Baidu. You will also find out how to add sub domains of your site after verification.
Step A: Login to Baidu Webmaster Platform (百度站长平台)
Login to your Baidu Webmaster Platform (百度站长平台) using the Mobile/Email/Username (手机/邮箱/用户名) and associated Password (密码) you have previously used to register for your Baidu account. Follow the 5 numbered steps below if you need visual guidance. Don’t have an existing Baidu account? Register for a new one here. Also check out our article on how to submit site to Baidu.
Step B: Add New Site
Upon successful login, you should be redirected to your dashboard (站点信息) within the Baidu Webmaster Platform (百度站长平台). Follow the 3 numbered steps below if you need visual guidance on adding a new site.
Input URL of new site you intend to add as shown below.
Click the “Next Step” (下一步) button as shown below to progress onwards.
A “Tip” (提示) confirmation box pops up suggesting you add the www prefix to your main domain and to confirm whether your website does include www. Click the appropriate button as shown below to progress onwards.
Assuming you decided to align your website’s preferred domain (canonical domain) setting to that in Google Search Console (previously Google Webmaster Tools) which is the www version, you can return to the previous screen to modify accordingly. Click the “Next Step” (下一步) button as shown below to progress onwards.
Step C: Verify New Site’s Ownership
You will be provided with 3 domain ownership verification methods to choose from. Upon selection of your preferred verification method by clicking the corresponding radio button, the accompanying verification preparation steps below these 3 options will change accordingly. Follow the 3 numbered steps below if you need visual guidance on the domain verification process. You could also terminate the verification process by clicking the White button.
Each verification method is explained in greater detail in Steps C1 to C3.
A confirmation box similar to the one below pops up informing you of your successful Baidu domain verification. Click the appropriate button as shown below to proceed to batch addition of sub domains under the currently verified one if necessary.
Your newly verified domain will now also appear under the listing of domains you manage under the “Site Management” (站点管理) page of your Baidu Webmaster Platform (百度站长平台).
Step C1: File Verification (文件验证) Method
File verification method comprises 4 steps, namely
- Click the first Blue link to download the most up-to-date HTML file needed for verification. This file typically assumes the filename “baidu_verify_aBcDefGhIj.html” where the 10 generated case-sensitive Red characters vary for each domain to be verified.
- Place this HTML file in the root directory of your configured domain.
- Click the second Blue link to validate proper access to this HTML file. For instance, assume the filename is “baidu_verify_aBcDefGhIj.html” for your domain “www.theflooringdecor.com” and you have placed the HTML file correctly. Upon clicking the second Blue link, you will see the text string “aBcDefGhIj” without quotation marks displayed on at the URL “http://www.theflooringdecor.com/baidu_verify_aBcDefGhIj.html“.
- Click the Blue button to “Complete Verification” (完成验证).
You are advised against deleting the HTML file after successful verification to ensure your domain’s ownership remains validated.
Step C2: HTML Tag Verification (HTML标签验证) Method
Insert the following code to your site’s homepage between the <head> and </head> HTML tags as shown below. The 10 generated case-sensitive Red characters typically vary for each domain to be verified. Upon updating your homepage’s HTML coding, click the Blue button to “Complete Verification” (完成验证).
<meta name=”baidu-site-verification” content=”aBcDefGhIj” />
You are advised against deleting this verification code from your homepage after successful verification to ensure your domain’s ownership remains validated.
Where do we insert this HTML Site Verification Code?
In order to monitor the performance of your site’s web pages, it is critical for you to insert this HTML site verification code within the header section of your homepage to verify your site in the Baidu Webmaster Platform. Here’s a suggested example showing the exact location to insert this code i.e. at line 3 which is highlighted below.
<html> <head> <meta name="baidu-site-verification" content="aBcDefGhIj" /> <title>My Title</title> </head> <body> Your Web Page's Contents </body> </html>
Step C3: CNAME Verification (CNAME验证) Method
Follow instructions from your domain name provider to create a new CNAME (Canonical Name) record to your DNS (Domain Name System) that proves to Baidu that you own the domain. The 10 generated case-sensitive Red characters typically vary for each domain to be verified. For instance, if your domain to be verified is http://www.theflooringdecor.com/, the CNAME record to be created could be as follows:
CNAME Label / Host: aBcDefGhIj.theflooringdecor.com
CNAME Destination / Target: zz.baidu.com
Upon successful creation of the CNAME record, click the Blue button to “Complete Verification” (完成验证).
You are advised against deleting this DNS record from your domain name provider after successful verification to ensure your domain’s ownership remains validated.
Step D: Batch Addition of Sub Domains (Optional)
You could proceed to perform batch addition of sub domains under the currently verified one by clicking the Blue button on the domain verification success confirmation box in Step C above. Alternatively, you can always perform “Batch Addition of Sub Domains” (批量添加子站) in future by selecting that option from the “Manage Site” (管理站点) dropdown menu on the “Site Management” (站点管理) page of your Baidu Webmaster Platform (百度站长平台).
You will be redirected to a new sub domain batch addition page. Follow the 2 numbered steps below if you need visual guidance on adding multiple sub domains to be managed in Baidu.
Step E: Site Management Options (Optional)
The “Manage Site” (管理站点) dropdown menu on the “Site Management” (站点管理) page of your Baidu Webmaster Platform (百度站长平台) provides you with 4 options as follows:
Batch Addition of Sub Domains (批量添加子站): Addition of multiple sub domains in batches as per Step D above.
Site Property Settings (站点属性设置): Configuration of site (PC/Mobile) and industry types, site logo submission, and Baidu security certification of customer service phone numbers.
User Management (管理用户): Addition and deletion of users of 2 different access levels.
Site Deletion (删除网站): Deletion of site and associated sub domains from the list of domains managed in the Baidu Webmaster Tools account. Baidu does not allow for deletion the site but retention of the site’s associated sub domains.
As promised, I have provided above arguably the most current step-by-step guidance on Baidu site verification, i.e. adding and verifying your domain ownership on Baidu Webmaster Platform, for the benefit of non Simplified Chinese readers. I also shared how you could add associated sub domains of your site after that.
Congratulations! You are one step closer to submitting your site URLs for indexing so they have a fighting chance of appearing in search results when Chinese netizens BǎiDù YīXià (“百度一下” which is analogous with “Google for it”). Hopefully your submitted links will be grabbed faster this way as claimed by Baidu.
