Black Hat SEO Techniques caused Expensive Google Penalties
In 2011, at least 2 US listed companies learnt the hard way that adopting unorthodox SEO techniques could result in expensive Google penalties. Imagine you are NASDAQ-listed online retailer, Overstock.com, Inc. (NASDAQ: OSTK), relying mainly on paid and natural search engines like Google, Bing, and Yahoo to rank your product offerings to attract consumer interest. Generally, higher ranking websites in both paid and natural search results lists attract much greater visitor share compared to similar sites, translating into increased sales. According to an article from The Wall Street Journal (WSJ), numerous top ranking links to Overstock for common keywords were penalized by Google for 2 months, plunging between No. 40 and No. 70 positions to 5th or 6th pages of search results on 22 Feb 2011. As uncommon links from “authoritative” educational websites boost search results rankings for links to Overstock, this gives the latter an unfair distorted ranking above its competitors and provides an inaccurate representation to people conducting searches too. This contradicts Google’s objectives of showing only the best quality, most relevant results to its searchers. In Overstock’s case, it had to remove or request removal of all “questionable” links highlighted by Google to be lifted from the penalty. Additionally, it had to increase sales and marketing expenses in other marketing channels, both online and offline, to offset drops in sales.
The same WSJ article also highlighted that the New York Times reported American mid-range department stores, J.C. Penney Company, Inc. (NYSE: JCP), suffered a similar penalty in early Feb 2011 as confirmed by Google’s head of the Webspam team, Matt Cutts. In J.C. Penney’s case, a black hat SEO consultant purportedly paid for thousands of links spread across multiple websites on the Internet to link directly to JCPenney.com. The retailer claimed it was unaware of and did not authorize deployment of unethical tactics.
